Burst is a part of the "Self-Centerd" collection. This image was created in response to the tragedies, tension, and anger that plagued the black community in late 2019.
This is my contribution. I do not have the capacity to unpack all of the injustices of the world every single day. I feel as if I’m bursting at the seams but I’m not allowed to stop taking everything in. This year has been wild and we’re only halfway through. I have no shame in saying it’s too much.
Right now the black community is in pain and the standard set of motivational quotes from extraordinary people are making their rounds. I see a lot of white people making a lot of noise in the name of being an ally. What I fear is the same thing will happen today, that happened yesterday and the day before, and the day before that. People will shake their fists, stomp their feet, then tire themselves out and settle down with the latest Tik tok challenge. It’s the same bs that happened last month, last year, last decade. Shame on us because we know the tricks, we can catch the slight of hand, and yet we still sit in awe as if we’re surprised.
If there is to be change, we must change. If there is to be change, we must change. If there is to be change, YOU MUST change.
I don’t have the answers, I don’t have the cure all. I’m not even sure where exactly to begin, but we must begin. Do something big, do something small, but for fucksake, do something. Challenge yourself and the people around you to do better and be better.
For no longer can I hold the sadness, venom, hate, and anger which gets put into the universe and I’m forced to consume. Especially the hate; you must tread carefully with hate.
Everything is building and I’m bursting at the seams but I’m not allowed to stop. I’m not allowed to quit. I’m not allowed to walk away. So call me when we’re ready to break some shit
